No one will want to be outdone. You might be surprised at the quality and variety of the food that turns up. And the surprise element is part of the fun. This can make for a much less formal, more relaxed occasion.

A traditional wedding cake is normally another costly item. Why not see what your local supermarket stocks. The quality can be very good. And if you are having a tiered cake, it is becoming more common to use less expensive types of cake for the upper tiers. Chocolate chip anyone? And if you buy a plain cake, do you know a gifted amateur who could decorate it for you? Cake decorating classes have been very popular.
The look and the music
For this type of informal get together, the decorations don’t need to be too lavish. There are plenty of ideas around for simple decorations that you and your helpers can put together without too much trouble. And forget the band or the DJ. You can easily put together a couple of compilation CDs that with keep things going with a swing.
Cheap wedding receptions can be a lot of fun and not too hard to organize. The trick is to plan well ahead and to know what you need to get done. You could end up with an occasion that lives in the memory. The money you save can be put to good use in your home or even on really special honeymoon.
